The town hall paid tribute to Argimiro Marnotes Rodríguez for his contribution to the consolidation of the Octopus Festival.

The plenary hall of the town hall of O Carballiño remained small today to welcome the dozens of people who attended this morning to the act of tribute to Argimiro Marnotes Rodríguez on the occasion of the 57th edition of the Octopus Festival.

The mayor, Francisco Fumega, stressed that “throughout the 57 years of the Octopus Festival there were many people who contributed to its consolidation and growth until it became the great gastonomic party that is currently, probably one of the best in Galicia and Spain. And there is no doubt that one of these people is Argimiro Mornotes Rodríguez. ”

Fumega said that “Argimiro was one of the great promoters of this party. When he was going for the tenth edition he promoted that Fernando Sánchez Bella, being Minister of Information and Tourism, declared it a Festival of Tourist Interest. It was also who convened for several years a journalistic contest to reward the best articles and reports published by the media, which helped to spread the party in newspapers and on the radio. And, above all, it contributed that this party was the great annual meeting of the emigration of our region and of Galicia ”.

The Carballinés councilor added that “being mayor began to dedicate the different editions of the party to the Galician centers of the world, and this helped the one that the Octopus Party began to know outside of Spain.”

“Thus,” said Fumega, “there are many merits that endorse this recognition of the municipality of O Carballiño and the Octopus Festival to Argimiro Marnotes Rodríguez. In addition, it should not be forgotten that, in the early years of the Octopus Festival, when there were and there are many pilgrims in Galicia, it was not so easy to convince the pulpeiros and taberneiros to have established their positions in the municipal park. It was his efforts that led to hoxendía the municipal park being absolutely filled with octopus stalls, taverns, bars and all kinds of products. ”

“That is why – concluiu Fumega-, for his contribution to the consolidation of this party, that is why we pay this tribute today and we deliver a plaque in recognition of his contribution to the Octopus Party of O Carballiño.”

The mayor then presented him with a commemorative plaque in recognition of “his contribution to the consolidation and enhancement of the Octopus Festival”.

Argimiro Marnotes thanked the deference and extended this recognition to all the people who during the 57 years of history of the party put their degree of sand.
He also referred to the period in which it was difficult to get the bars and pulpeiros to go to the municipal park, and which, after getting the declaration of Tourist Interest Festival in the tenth edition, had no value later and had to repeat the declaration request.

He also said that from 1974, when Argimiro Marnotes was the mayor, he began promoting the party by calling a journalistic contest in the press and later on the radio, and dedicating each edition to Galician centers in the world.

And, finally, he did not forget about the dozens of volunteer boys who for several editions collaborated with the party by serving in the official venue and performing other support work.
