The Municipality of O Carballiño will honor the members of the Pena Nove within the official events planned for this edition of the Festa do Pulpo. The choice of this group as recipients of the tribute was clear. They were the ones who, in a direct way, formalized the Octopus Festival, which went from being a gathering of friends for lunch in the park, to a municipal gastronomic party that, over the years, became the gastronomic party most important of all Galicia, and that arouses great interest outside the autonomous community and outside the national borders.

The Pena Nove was formed by a group of Carballiñeses, with wide cultural concerns, and who always had the intention of supporting how many activities took place in the town. Thus, when three members of this club were part of the municipal government, they decided to officially shape the octopus party. Specifically, it was in the mid-60s when the city council takes over this party, through the party commission, for a year later to become a separate commission, as decided by the mayor at that time, Javier Perea

The members of that Pena Nove were Fontaiñas, Milucho do Estate Quieto, the two brothers, Tercero, Ledo, Pachó, Gonzalo, Juan Victor and Benigno, and later if he joined, as the guest of exception, since he always participated in the activities of the penalty, Alfonso Cerviño. Professor Don Juan Corral, and then Mayor Javier Perea were also named honorary members of this Pena.

In addition to being the promoters of this gastronomic party in the assets and achievements of Pena Nove, he is the first to celebrate a Mass in Galician on the day of the Galician Letters, the first Mass that was officiated in the mother tongue throughout the province in that decade of the 60.

They were also the drivers of the car test of the Rally do Lacón, and based on the carnival that formed the charanga Os Liborianos.

For all this, the city council has decided to dedicate this year’s tribute to the Octopus Festival to this group of Carballiñeses so active since its inception. The tribute will be on Monday, August 3 at the City Hall of Carballiño at 12:00.
